Look at the desert sky! Its so blue! And all the birds chirping… how did they get here? Why are they here? And look!! All the colors!! Gosh, all the colors!! Purples! Yellow! Orange! Green! SO MANY COLORS EVERYWHERE!!! Far out!!!
I know what you may be thinking but no …this is not a drug induced vision in the desert… it’s the Super Bloom!
If you are in SoCal (aka – Southern California) now is a great time to take an adventure to your “local” desert to check out the “super bloom”.
The bloom can be found in many deserts in SoCal such as Joshua Tree National Park or even the Mojave Desert… but if you’re lucky enough to be near San Diego I would recommend visiting Anza-Borrego (California’s largest State Park).
Beside cool nights and warm day time temperatures (aka – not hot enough to cook an egg on a rock) this area has come alive thanks to the abundant fall and winter rains. Borrego Panorama
Most of the showy desert wildflowers are ephemerals because they are short-lived. Funny enough, this brief but colorful lifespan ensures survival here. Rather than fight to stay alive during the desert’s brutal summers, these annual wildflowers lie dormant as seeds. When enough rain finally does fall, the seeds hastily sprout, grow, blossom and in order to go back to seed again before the dry heat returns.
Those interested in catching a glimpse of the ‘super bloom’ should visit during the morning hours, as many flowers close during the afternoon heat. A bloom this big hasn’t happened since 2005, according to the Borrego Desert Nature Center, so now is the time to go find your desert adventure.
