Earth survived another year – 5 reasons to celebrate
Earth day is quickly approaching and with the impending doom (CNN, Times, Guardian ) that is the current administration’s policy towards the only planet most of us can live on – Matt Damon aside – it’s important we/you/I get out and give our planet the love it deserves. Here are 5 reasons you should get active and enjoy Earth Day!
- The chance to enjoy your planet with your friends
On Earth Day there are so so so many ED events that you can attend it doesn’t matter what state you live in! From Texas or California; to Utah and New York. From local events to regional events to massive events, if you’re not active in your community on Earth Day you are missing a great chance to be a part of something bigger, march for climate or just have a damn good time and an Earth Day party!
- Picking up trash, cleaning a street, not driving – whatever just do something – helps!
Today, and really every day, you get the chance to improve your world. Whether its picking up garbage from the street (no biohazard trash please!) or taking a shorter shower, small consistent actions, along with other people’s activities, goes a long way and will make a profound difference in our world in the long run! Heck, I am San Diego this Earth Day! I guarantee there is something you can do to improve your community too!
- Talk to people about conservation, recycling or anything Earth Day related you find interesting!
As an Adventure Hydrologist, I am always talking to people about water quality while kayaking. Or discussing water conservation while white water rafting. Shoot, I can’t shut up about the Wonderful Company and their bid for total water domination in California. Now, today, is the time to talk to your friends, family, colleagues about , recycling more, switching to solar… hell! Why not talk about the repercussions of an asteroid strike on the planet?! Talk about instant climate change! Though I would ease him/her into that and start off with “nice weather we have today?”
- It’s never too late to do something!
Alright, this is your Ebenezer Scrooge moment… the third and freaking scariest ghost of “Future Earth Days” just visited to show you that without action the planet will be lost, and you with it. [Insert dramatic music] But really, if you didn’t do something for your planet this year and don’t regularly wake up in a cold sweats then bah-humbug!
But you too have a chance to make a difference now! You can change the future! You can make this place a better world for your kids!!! So, give yourself a “half crown” for that Earth Day goose; run down to the local Earth Day event; pick up some trash and save you butt! And your planet.
5. Write your good for nothing or amazing (opinions welcome) congress person and demand action!
Contact: House – Senate – White House
It’s your voice they should be listening to… If we call, contact, write, (annoy if need be) them enough; we can better protect our planet!
Happy Earth Day!
