California Drought Not in- Memoriam.  Water is the most important resource we have and now, thanks to the  wet and snowy winter in the Sierra Nevada, California has declared the drought over! But shouldn’t someone call bull$hi#.

Termination of the Colorado River and the Vanishing Salton Sea

It’s important we remember that for the past 5+ years California has been in one of the most prolific and intense droughts in recorded history… and one year of feast does not make up for years of famine.

“New” water policy has returned California back to a time before the half-decade drought and we are back as if there was never an issue in the first place.  WOOOO!!! Snowboard until August 2017!  – and seriously I am really excited about that!!!  But have we already forgotten about the drought?

California Drought Not Over

Decades of over-pumping groundwater have irreversibly altered clay layers in parts of California’s Central Valley, causing the ground to sink and permanently reducing its capacity to store water

Salt Free…huh? What about tap…?        Salton Sea, CA

When the hell did we go back to the 1930’s and the days of NorCal dam building  so L.A. could get their fix of the clear blue?  I understand the “I won’t pay unless you give me mine policy” that LA maintains… but really?  Also, when did it become a good idea to once again build evaporation crazy reservoirs in the middle of the desert… but this time fill them with ancient groundwater just to water cow food with it?   FYI – the proposed reservoir would be made from an old open pit mine and is just outside Joshua Tree National Park.

Come summer  funding for a water tank program showers and a non-potable water filling station, in one of the most drought effected areas in California  will come to an end.

Dry, crusty… water policy

I have an idea! Why don’t we return critical program funding back to the very areas that are still in drought… and who are still worried about where their drinking water will come from?

Why don’t water managers and politicians alike manage water like we are headed back into a half-decade drought as opposed to letting the worst worst worst water wasters get back to being the worst?

Human impact and drought

We can do something about this!  We can improve our lives by joining our friends and family  in protecting and enhancing our environment.  Get outside and volunteer to make the change! Go make and then experience a better planet.  Pick up trash; don’t pour oil down a storm drain; recycle!  All simple things to do.  Also remember… we are not out of a drought!
